MUST-DO

Make a Visit to Phang Nga Bay

Without a doubt, one of the favourite must-see attractions amongst tourists in Phuket is the stunning Phang Nga Bay. Decorated with limestone rock formations, lagoons, and archaeological sites, the bay is the perfect place to experience island life. 

There are around 40 small islands that you could island-hop or kayak around, the most famous being Koh Tapu, known as James Bond Island for its appearance in The Man With The Golden Gun. Koh Panak Island is also a popular kayaking spot thanks to its stunning caves and lagoons. 

An extensive part of it is protected as a marine national park and many different animal species found here. We recommend booking a full-day guided tour to make the most of your time here. 

Tip: The bay is naturally protected from a lot of the bad weather in the monsoon season due to the way it is located.

Explore the James Bond Island (Koh Tapu/Nail Island) 

If you don’t have time to explore the whole of Phang Nga Bay, then just be sure to make some time to visit Koh Tapu (‘Nail Island’ in Thai). Made famous for its appearance in the James Bond film, The Man With The Golden Gun (1974), its undoubtedly one of the most famous landmarks in Phuket, possibly even Thailand. A distinctive trait of this famous bay is the number of sheer limestone cliffs that vertically jut out of the emerald-green water.

Bear in mind that it can get extremely busy with tourist boats on the James Bond Island during high season, so be sure to book a tour in advance. 

Note: The island is also part of the Ao Phang Nga Marine National Park. 

Visit Koh Panyee Fishing Village

Koh Panyee is a definite must-see whilst in Phuket. This remarkable fishing village was once built by Malay fishermen and lies over the emerald waters on giant stilts. Its still unknown just how many wooden and concrete piles hold up this extraordinary community, but it’s certainly fascinating.

There is a population of just over 1,600 people on the island and around 360 families, all of which are descendants of Toh Baboo and his family and friends who were the first people to settle on this island over 200 years ago. Legend has it, they made a vow to each other to raise a flag over the mountain if one of them found a place where there were lots of fish and where everyone could live. That’s how the island got the name, Koh Panyee (Ko Panyi) which is Thai for ‘Island of the Flag’.

Tip: Be sure to check out the floating football pitch which is built from scraps of wood and fishing rafts!

Take a Trip to Phi Phi Islands

If you’re not planning on visiting the Phi Phi islands as part of your holiday, its definitely worth getting a boat trip over. The most famous spot in the islands is Maya Bay, made famous from the Leonardo Di Caprio film ‘The Beach’. Other must-see spots in Phi Phi Islands include Bamboo Island, Monkey Beach, and the Viking Cave. If you’re on a guided tour, you’ll have time for swimming and snorkelling stops. 

Visit Similan Islands

The Similan Islands are one of the best-known island groups in the Andaman Sea, lying around 84km northwest of Phuket. The national park is home to nine breathtaking islands known for their coral-white sandy beaches, crystal-clear blue waters, and amazing marine wildlife. In fact, the Similan Islands were even voted one of the 10 ‘most interesting underwater sites in the world’. Here, you’ll find some of the best beaches in Thailand. 

Getting there: It takes around 90 minutes by speedboat off the coast of Phang-Nga and is possible to explore on a day trip. Or, if you fancy staying here, it takes around eight or more hours by slow boat from Phuket. Most guided day tours include swimming and snorkelling tours. 

Tip: If you want to do this tour, try and avoid the wet season between mid-May and mid-October. 

CULTURAL

Visit the Famous Big Buddha

Another must-see attraction in Phuket is the ‘Big Buddha’. Sitting at the top of the Nakkerd Hills and standing at 45 meters tall, this great Buddha is the third tallest statue in the whole of Thailand. 

Covered in Burmese white marble, it can be seen from many parts of the island and sparkles beautifully in the sunlight. Once you reach the top, you’ll be greeted with a tranquil atmosphere, dharma music, and unbeatable 360-degree views of the Phuket island. The drive up to the top itself is worth noting, with amazing views, stop points and restaurants. 

Take a Trip to Wat Chalong

The most important Buddhist temple on the whole of Phuket, Wat Chalong was built at the beginning of the 19th century. The tallest building on the grounds is a 60-metre tall stupa called the Grand Pagoda. This popular spot contains a small fragment of bone from the Lord Buddha. The pagoda is beautifully decorated with Buddha images and pictures that depict his life story.

Party in Bangla Road

Discover Phuket’s exotic nightlife life. Known as Bangla walking street, this road is known as the heart of Phuket nightlife, and is a must-do while visiting Phuket This 400-metre road is full of loud music and cheap beer. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy live music, rooftop bars, nightclubs, and go-go bars. There are hundreds of soi’s (alleys) leading from each side of the road to even more hidden gem bars. 

Chill Out (Or Party) in the Beach Clubs

It’s no secret that Phuket is well known for its amazing choice of beach clubs. Despite its peaceful vibe in the daytime, the island really does come to life at night. From stylish beach bars great for chilling-out on to luxury ocean clubs perfect for partying, there’s enough choice for all ages, budgets, and tastes. 

Some of our favourites include:

Café del Mar Phuket – a classy beach bar from the world-famous brand out of Ibiza. Located on Kamala Beach. The higher-than-average price range attracts a sophisticated but fun-loving crowd, who enjoy smooth music played by resident and guest DJs, accompanied by a live saxophonist.

Catch Beach Club – located near Sunwing Resort in Bangtao, this beach club is a favourite amongst local residents and regular visitors to Phuket. It’s a great place for families with young kids. There is a swimming pool and some good options for water sports on top of their killer cocktails and amazing Thai food. 

Paradise Beach Club – the home of Phuket’s only full-moon parties on the beach. This large, well-developed party spot located in an isolated bay is a short distance from Patong Beach. It has an air of exclusivity without being prohibitively expensive. 

Explore Old Phuket Town

Built on Phuket’s tin boom, before it was huge tourist location, European traders from the 16th and 17th century used to come here to source tin. There are hundreds of brightly coloured Sino (Chinese & Portuguese) buildings. Although Old Phuket Town is a must-see whilst in Phuket, it isn’t as busy as you’d expect due to everyone being on the beaches instead. It’s easy to explore the town on foot and there are lots of amazing cafes and restaurants. The main streets of Old Phuket Town are Thalang, Phang Nga, Krabi, Dibuk, and Yoawarat.

Take a Tour of Baan Teelanka

Acclaimed as one of the top 5 attractions in the island, Baan Teelanka (‘Upside Down’ in English) is the first of its kind in Thailand. This three-story inverted structure offers a no-gravity experience and a unique photo opportunity. There’s also a garden maze and two escape rooms to enjoy. 

Tour the Chalong Bay Rum Distillery

No trip to Phuket would be complete without a visit to Chalong Bay Rum Distillery – home to Thailand’s best-known rum which is sold around the world. Join a tour and learn all about the French distillation techniques which have been used for hundreds of years. You’ll see how sugarcane gets transformed into rum and be able to sample different types of high-end rum. There are even cocktail workshops you can join if you fancy mixing things up!

Explore Khao Phra Thaeo National Park

Located on the Northern part of the island, Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary is the last remaining evergreen rainforest of Phuket Island. Many animals live here in the wild, including langurs, slow lorises, boars, deers, monkeys, and more. There are hiking trails throughout the rainforest to follow, and you can easily walk for 3-4 hours. After a day of hiking through the forest, be sure to chill out at Ton Sae and Bang Pae waterfalls. If you get a tour guide, you increase your chances of seeing the animals and noticing the rare flowers. 

Experience Siam Niramit Phuket

The Siam Niramit is a must-see outdoor performance that beautifully narrates over 700 years of Thailand history and heritage. BEACHES

Kata Noi Beach

While it may only be 700m long, Kata Noi is one of the most breathtaking beaches in Phuket. Just a small drive south from the more popular Kata beach, it has a more private island feel to it whilst still being fairly developed with the right amount of restaurants and resorts nearby. From the Kata viewpoint, you can look out across at the bays of Karon, Kata and Kata Noi. 

Kata Noi is also great for snorkelling and surfing if you fancy it. If not, just chill out on the white sands and watch the world go by… 

Tip: The best time to visit the beach is between November and April as swimming can sometimes become dangerous during the monsoon season.

Nai Harn Beach

Located to the south of Phuket, Nai Harn a small bay with beautiful powdery-soft sand and emerald-hued waters. Nai Harn is on our list of favourites as it is slightly undeveloped in comparison to some of the other Phuket beaches, due to being owned by the Samnak Song Monastery. 

The sea here changes from calm in the high season to strong currents in low season, making it a popular spot for Phuket’s surfing and kiteboarding crowd. Just behind the beach is a lake, where people come to fish and take a ride in swan-shaped pedalos.

Surin Beach

Since a visit from the late King Rama IX in the 50s, Surin Beach has become a popular hangout spot amongst the rich and wealthy. Here, you’ll find some impressive high-class resorts and an amazing golf course. The beach itself is impressive. Soft, white sands are backed by rows of palm trees, while the sea is a mixture of the most amazing shades of blue. 

Patong Beach

One of Phuket’s most famous beaches, Patong is well known for its watersport activities, unrivalled nightlife, and buzzing atmosphere. Its become more popular amongst young tourists due to its party scene and being so closely located to Bangla Road. Regardless, we think everyone should try and visit this beach for the full Phuket experience!

Phuket Weekend Night Market

Phuket Weekend Market is the island’s largest night market. Also known as Naka Market, Thai people also call it ‘Talad Tairod’, meaning ‘Car Boot Sale’. And we can see why. Phuket Weekend Market sells everything from dodgy electronic items to adorable stuffed toys. Regardless, it’s an experience that just can’t be missed. 

Street Walking Market

The presence of colonial buildings and stalls selling traditional Thai food and unique handicrafts make this a must-visit in Phuket. Also referred to as Lard Yai by the locals, Phuket Walking Street Market has a cultural vibe. 

VIEWPOINTS

It’s no secret that Phuket has some of the best views to offer in Thailand. And the great thing is that you don’t have to trek halfway across the country to appreciate them. All you need at the most is a scooter, hire car or taxi. Here are some of our favourite spots to enjoy unbeatable views of Phuket.

Khao Khad Views Tower 

Also known as Khao Khad Views Tower, Panwa Viewpoint offers full 360° views out over southern and eastern Phuket. There are 136 steps to reach the top but its 100% worth it. From the viewpoint, you’ll be able to see Khao Khad Bay, Panwa Cape, the ‘Big Buddha’ and much more…

Laem Singh Viewpoint 

Laem Singh Viewpoint is a popular stop on the coast road between Kamala Beach and Surin Beach. It’s the perfect spot for just chilling out and enjoying the amazing views. From here, you can enjoy great views to the south across Laem Singh beach below. It’s also a popular place for watching Phuket’s famous sunsets.

Promthep Cape

Promthep Cape is one of the most photographed locations in Phuket. Every evening, people travel from all over Phuket to gather and watch the sunset over the island. Busier than most viewpoints, it’s definitely not one to be missed!

Windmill Viewpoint 

Located between Ya Nui and Nai Harn beaches in south Phuket, Windmill Viewpoint features west-coast vistas similar to Promthep Cape’s (but is much quieter). Its a relatively small viewpoint and there isn’t a lot do there, but the views are tremendous.

MUST DO

Visit Angkor (Archaeological Park)

Angkor Archaeological Park represents the pinnacle of ancient Khmer architecture, art and civilization. It is undoubtedly one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia and is where you can find Siem Reap’s iconic Angkor Wat. There are also 50 Hindu and Buddhist temple sites here that were constructed between the 9th and 12th centuries. 

This park was once the largest pre-industrial city in the world and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992. Another important site here is the Terrace of the Elephants – a 300-metre-long wall decorated with fine sculptures of elephants, garudas, a 5-headed horse, Khmer dancers and warriors. 

Tip: Visitors looking to explore the entirety of Angkor Archaeological Park are encouraged to purchase the multi-day passes as there are so many sightseeing opportunities here.

MARKETS & SHOPPING 

Visit The Old Market

Locally known as Psah Chas, the Old Market in Siem Reap is located right in the heart of the town – on the west side of the river. It’s the oldest Khmer market in Siem Reap and is popular with both locals and tourists. Many locals visit here in the early mornings to shop which is an experience to see if you fancy getting there for sunrise! On sale at the market, you’ll find souvenirs, t-shirts, silk, wood & stone carvings, and Cambodian street food.

Explore Art Night Market

Located on the east bank of the Siem Reap River, right opposite the Old Market (Phsar Chas), the Siem Reap Art Center Night Market is one of the newer night markets in the area. The market opened in 2012 and has become a popular spot amongst tourists. You’ll also find the usual handicrafts, clothes, and souvenirs on sale here. The market also has a couple of restaurants on-site which offer both Khmer and Western food.

Go to the Angkor Night Market

The Angkor Night Market, commonly known as the Original Night Market, was the first night market to open in Siem Reap. Established in 2007, it has been copied countless times – but never replicated. Stroll through over 200 bamboo huts and shop the thousands of souvenirs on sale. There’s even an inside bar with live music. 

Open: 5pm-12am (7 days a week)

Visit Made in Cambodia Market

As its name suggests, The Made in Cambodia Market brings together the most exciting examples of craftsmanship in Cambodia today. They heavily promote Cambodian goods, rather than imported goods from countries like China. The aim of this artisan market is to help locals – from making the goods to selling them. You’ll find here: wood and stone carvings, bars, restaurants, clothes, bags, accessories, recycled products, and more. There’s even live acoustic music and traditional dance shows on the weekend evenings. 

Open: 11am-7pm (Friday-Sunday) 

HISTORY

Learn at the Landmine Museum

Just like its neighbouring country, Laos, dozens of Cambodians are injured or killed each year due to leftover landmines or other unexploded bombs leftover from the 20th century. 

In 1997, tourists began hearing stories about a young Khmer man and ex-soldier, Aki Ra, who cleared landmines with a stick. He also had a house full of defused ordnance. Ra began charging $1 to see his collection, which then became the landmine museum.

The museum relocated in 2007, 25km north of the city, and currently houses a four gallery museum – as well as being the home to 27 children. The Cambodia Landmine Museum aims to tell Aki Ra’s story, tell the world about the horrors of landmines and explain that war is only half the problem, and to care for the children who live at the museum.

Explore the Angkor National Museum

Before you explore the famed Angkor Wat complex in Siem Reap, we recommend visiting the Angkor National Museum. This archaeological museum will take you back to the golden era of the ancient Khmer Kingdom. Learn from the interactive displays, exhibits, and collections mainly dated from the 9th-14th century. 

The museum shares useful information on the temples, particularly about the famed Angkor Wat, as well as the Khmer art, culture, and architecture. The building itself is beautifully designed, resembling a temple itself, and has a state-of-the-art showpiece on the majestic history of Angkor.

Visit the War Museum Cambodia

Located West of the city, War Museum Cambodia features outdoor displays of old, broken-down military hardware. Such as fighter jets, tanks, helicopters, and artillery guns – taken straight from the battlefield. The main aim of the museum is to keep the memory of the civil war alive. 

The entrance fee is about US$5 per person. There are even free tour guides available from those who are ex-veterans, eyewitnesses of the war, and landmine victims. So you’ll get to learn about their personal experiences and stories of the civil war. You can even hold some of the small arms like M16s, AK47s and rocket-propelled grenades!

NATURE

Visit the Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity

Located 45km north of Siem Reap, the Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity is a non-governmental organisation in Cambodia. 

It is one of the first nature conservation and endangered wildlife rescue and breeding centres in the country. It rescues, rehabilitates, and releases threatened wildlife into Cambodian forests.  There are also breeding programs for some threatened species to help preserve them from extinction. There are a couple of tours available each day.

Tip: ACCB is located on the walk from the highway to Kbal Speanon – so it’s worth doing both at the same time.

Explore Phnom Kulen National Park

Located in the Phnom Kulen mountain massif in Siem Reap Province, Phnom Kulen National Park is famed for its two stunning waterfalls. In fact, there are two waterfalls which vary in size depending on whether it’s the rainy season. One is 5 metres tall and the other is over 15 metres tall. Legend has it, this national park was the birthplace of the Khmer empire, where the King proclaimed independence from Java. There is also a Kbal Spean archaeological site located on the mountain.

CULTURE

Go to Wat Preah Prom Rath

Located in the centre of Siem Reap, on the west bank of the river, Wat Preah Prom Rath is a local monastery packed with colourful statues and stupas, lush gardens, stunning wall paintings, and replica war boats. 

The temple boasts a history which may even date back to as early as the 13th century, and there’s even a sleeping buddha which was said to be installed in 1500. Most of what you see here though was built after World War II. Wat Preah Prom Rath is a great temple to visit if you don’t want to go far from the middle of the city, whilst learning how Cambodian Buddhism is practised today.

Visit Wat Damnak Pagoda 

Whilst in Siem Reap, be sure to visit the largest pagoda in the city, Wat Damnak. This unique temple was once a royal palace at the beginning of the 20th century, during the reign of King Sisowath (1904–1927), before serving as a Khmer Rouge military depot between 1975 and 1979. 

It now offers a tranquil retreat from the bustling town centre and features traditional Khmer architecture, frangipani trees, stone sculptures of Buddha, and a pond containing colourful water lilies. The monastery is home to many monks and also has a primary school, 2 charities, and a sewing academy for young local women. It’s the ideal place to experience the daily life of its resident monks. In fact, most monks here will be more than happy to show you around and educate you on Buddhism. 

Go to Kampong Phluk Floating Village (Tonle Sap Lake)

Kampong Phluk offers a truly unique experience that exposes you to local life in Siem Reap whilst exploring the floating markets and fish farms here. Located 16km southeast of Siem Reap, this cluster of three floating villages features tall, traditional stilt houses. And, if you visit during the dry season, you’ll see the houses suspended by 16-foot stilts.

Depending on what time of year you visit, there are around 3,000 inhabitants. Also, the village is also connected to Tonle Sap lake – the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

Visit Angkor Silk Farm

The Angkor Silk Farm produces some of the finest silk work in the whole of Cambodia and is a must-visit when travelling in Siem Reap. At the farm, you can see all stages of the production process, from the cultivation of mulberry trees to the nurturing of silkworms to the dyeing and weaving of silk. Clothing, interior-design products and accessories are all produced here and the farm employs more than 400 local people. 

Tip: There are free guided tours available daily as well as a free shuttle bus that departs from Les Chantiers Écoles in Siem Reap at 9.30am and 1.30pm daily.

Experience Phare the Cambodian Circus

Treat yourself to a night you’ll never forget at the Phare Cambodia Circus. A similar vibe to Cirque du Soleil, Phare is so much more than your average circus. This not-for-profit organisation uses theatre, music, dance, and modern circus arts to tell Cambodian stories, with a social message behind each performance. 

Several generations of performers who have graduated through Phare’s original Battambang campus have even gone on to perform in international shows around the world. Many of the performers have deeply moving personal stories of abuse and hardship, making their talents a triumph against the odds. It really is a world-class performance and inspiring night out suitable for the whole family. 

Tip: Each show lasts for around an hour. No animals are used in any performance. All proceeds are reinvested into Phare Ponleu Selpak activities.

Get an Adrenaline Boost at Angkor Zipline

Visit Artbox

Prepare to be amazed at Siem Reap’s Artbox museum. Just a few kilometres outside the centre of the city, this museum features over 150 two-dimensional pieces of art that play tricks on your mind and make you feel (and look) like your part of the art, too.

Les Artisans d’Angkor

Artisans Angkor is a Cambodian social business which was created to give young people in the village access to work. As well as reviving traditional Khmer craftsmanship and cultural heritage.

Since it was founded in the late 1990s, Artisans Angkor has focused on providing professional skills, opportunities, and good working conditions to communities with limited educational opportunities. It has now opened 48 workshops in Siem Reap and provides employment to over 1100 people. Free guided tours are also on offer for visitors.

Immerse yourself into true Khmer tradition by joining a ceramic pottery class in the heart of the city! Learn how to create your own Khmer pottery and add unique Khmer carvings to it. MUST DO

Visit the S21 Prison (Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum)

This former high school in central Phnom Penh was transformed into a political prisoners’ camp during the Khmer Rouge regime in 1975. Known as Security Prison 21 (S-21), or Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocide, it is estimated that 20,000 people were imprisoned here, between 1,000 and 1,500 at any one time. There were only twelve known survivors and the chief of the prison was convicted for crimes against humanity.

Today, S-21 Prison one of Cambodia’s most visited attractions. Most of the site is in the same condition as it was discovered in 1979 when the Vietnamese army liberated Phnom Penh. The tiny brick cells, blood-splattered walls, and abandoned torture tools offer a sobering insight into the brutal regimes that were carried out here. Khmer Rouge kept detailed records of prisoners, and this is on show throughout. 

Tip: If you’re travelling with family, it is important to note that this may not be suitable for younger children.

Visit Choeung Ek Genocidal Center

The most famous monument to the killing fields, the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center has been built around the mass graves of the thousands of victims, most of which were executed here after a brutal interrogation at S-21 Prison. Almost 9,000 bodies were discovered at the mass graves of Choeung Ek. 

Now serving as a memorial park, the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center features a Buddhist stupa filled with more than 8,000 human skulls. After heavy rainfall, you will notice that clothing and even bones surface due to the huge number of bodies in the shallow graves. 

Tip: Choose to either walk around the graves yourself, learn more through a headset-guided walking tour, or join a guided walking tour.

BAZ: Explore The Royal Palace

Occupied by the Kings of Cambodia since the 1860’s (except from the time of Khmer Rouge). So some parts of it are shut to the public / Main attraction in the palace is the throne hall – with a 59m high tower on top / Large parts of the gardens are open to the public

See The Silver Pagoda (Preah Vihear Preak Keo Morakot)

One of Cambodia’s only temples to survive under the Khmer Rouge, the Silver Pagoda (or Temple of the Emerald-Crystal Buddha) is named for its silver floor which is covered in 5 tonnes of silver. Originally built in 1892 with wood (but rebuilt in 1962), the walls of the Pagoda are covered in intricate murals depicting the famous Cambodian poem, Reamker. 

Note: Open from 8-11am and 2.30-5pm daily. Admission also includes access to the Royal Palace when the king is not in residence.

Explore Phnom Penh Night Market

Phnom Penh’s Night Market (Phsar Reatrey) sells everything from replica designer clothing and shoes, locally made souvenirs, cambodian silk, to amazing Cambodian street food with picnic-style floor seating. Located on the Tone Sap riverfront, the open-air market’s cooler temperatures and relaxing, festival vibes make this one of Phnom Penh’s most popular spots to visit. 

Enjoy live entertainment with performances from singers, musicians, and dancers at the centre stage. It’s the only official night market in the city so it can get pretty busy!

Getting there: Opens from Friday to Sunday 17.00 to 00.00. Central Market is just over 2 kilometres from the city center. It takes just a few minutes to go there by tuk-tuk, taxi or bicycle. 

Wander in The Central Market

Phnom Penh Central Market, also known as Phsar Thmei (meaning ‘New Market’), is the Cambodian capital’s largest market. Established in 1937, this market within an art-deco style dome features a huge indoor mall filled with four hallways filled with shops. At the time of its construction, Phsar Thmei was said to be the largest market in Asia. 

The market is packed full of all kinds of goods, from impressively intricate gold and silverware to souvenirs, electronic goods, imported and traditional Cambodian clothing, flowers, and an impressive array of watches. You’ll also find an amazing selection of colourful fresh food stalls selling classic, local Camodian dishes. 

Getting there: Phsar Thmei Market is located at Street 128 (Kampuchea Krom) in Phsar Thmei 1 Commune, Daun Penh District. It’s open daily from 6.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. 

Visit The Russian Market

The Russian Market in Phnom Penh is the one market that everyone travelling in the capital should come visit at least once. Why? Well, it is the place to shop for authentic Cambodian souvenirs and discounted name-brand (and knock-off) clothing. You’re likely to spot well-known brands such as Billabong, Calvin Klein, Banana Republic, Gap and Next. 

The market gets its name from the Russian expat population that visited and shopped here in the 1980s. Be sure to save some room for food though as the market serves everything from Kmer coffee and grilled bananas, to fried crickets and silkworms and the famous prahok.

Explore Orussey Market

Orussey Market Phnom Penh is one of the most traditional markets located at the heart of the city.

The market is much more geared towards locals than tourists, so you won’t find as many souvenirs here. You are more likely to find local produce, food, electronics, and hardware here. But the main reason why you should visit Orussey Market is simply to immerse yourself in the local lifestyle. Explore as you watch local Cambodians go about their day selling and buying.

Stroll Through The Old Market (Phsar Chas)

Phsar Chas, which roughly translated means the ‘Old Market’, is located 650 metres walking distance to the south east of Wat Phnom in Phnom Penh. 

The market occupies a whole city block and sells mainly fresh fruit, meat, and vegetables. One of the more crowded markets in Phnom Penh, it’s definitely worth a visit to observe the bustle and local life in the busy Capital. 

Unlike the nearby Central Market, Phnom Penh’s Old Market is a mainly outdoor market which caters for Cambodian shoppers looking for cheap buys.

Tip: Opening times vary, but food stalls are open as early as 6am and close as late as 8pm. When the Old Market shuts down, the Night Market across the road opens up.

CULTURAL

Explore Wat Phnom

Built in 1372, Wat Phnom is on the only ‘hill’ in Phnom Penh. Legend has it that the first pagoda on this site was built to house four statues of Buddha deposited here by the waters of the Mekong River and discovered by Lady Penh. Hence the city name Phnom Penh or ‘hill of Penh’. At 27 metres tall, Wat Phnom is the tallest religious structure in the city.

Visit Wat Langka

Reputedly one of the city’s five original wats, Wat Langka is a colourful Buddhist temple in the heart of the city. Located near the Independence Monument, the temple was originally established as a sanctuary for holy writings – acting as the main library in Cambodia for religious writings. The temple luckily managed to escape total destruction from the Khmer rouge as it was used as their main storehouse.

Visit Botum Pagoda Park (Wat Botum)

Established in 1432, Botum Pagoda Park was one of the five original monasteries founded by King Ponhea Yat that survived the Khmer Rouge reign. Many politicians and high ranking people of the city are buried here. 

At the park, you’ll find the Cambodian-Vietnamese Friendship Monument. There is also a huge sandstone figure of a Khmer woman holding a baby, flanked by two armed Vietnamese liberation soldiers. It commemorates the Vietnamese liberation of Phnom Penh from the Khmer Rouge in January 1979.

Tour Silk Island

Jump in a tuk-tuk and escape the bustle of the city as you head to Cambodia’s peaceful Silk Island. Located in the middle of the Mekong River, Silk Island is named for its traditional silk-weaving communities. You will learn about the silk-making process and be able to buy some authentic silks and cotton for yourself. Known locally as Koh Dach, Silk Island offers a unique experience and insight into the rural Cambodian lifestyle.

The Living Arts Theatre in Cambodia is a stunning open-air theatre in the gardens of the national museum. Dancers and live musicians tell stories of Cambodian history through captivating performances. It’s a must-visit amongst tourists, and you can even join artists for a 90-minute  classical and folk dance workshop.

Visit Daughters of Cambodia

Founded by Ruth Elliott, a British psychologist who was working with young victims of sex trafficking, Daughters of Cambodia helps women to escape sex work. The charity offers alternative employment, holistic recovery, life skill education, and much more. Within the boutique, you’ll find fashion accessories, t-shirts, toys, jewellery, and more. There’s even a spa and cafe to chill out in – all whilst helping an amazing cause. 

Explore Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center

Located around 25 miles from the city, the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center is the largest Zoo in Cambodia. It has over 1,200 rescued animals, many of which are listed as endangered or vulnerable. You’ll spot elephants, tigers, gibbons, crocodiles, bears, and more. The zoo cares for these animals and helps to rehabilitate them from the illegal wildlife trades in Cambodia. 

Tip: Ticket entry costs 5 USD per adult, and 2.5 USD per child. 

SIGHTSEEING

Cruise Down the Mekong River

Be sure to spend a full day exploring the beautiful and picturesque Mekong Delta. Made up of 39,000 square kilometres of waterways, Mekong is the twelfth longest river in the world. It’s also the seventh longest river in the whole of Asia. Phnom Penh marks the beginning of the delta system of the Mekong River. 

Hop on a tourist boat for a relaxing cruise along the Mekong River itself. You’ll pass by stilt houses, schools, rice paddies, fruit plantations, and floating fishing villages. The most common boat trips are sunset cruises which also include dinner. Alternatively, explore the Mekong River via water taxi. This is a cheaper option but is also a popular form of transport for locals commuting.

Visit An Ethical Elephant Sanctuary

Spending the day with an elephant is on pretty much everyone’s bucket list whilst travelling in Thailand. And it goes without saying that elephant riding centres are unethical and impose danger on the elephants.

So instead, travellers today are encouraged to choose to visit elephant sanctuaries – and Chiang Mai has some of the best in Thailand. At a sanctuary, you’ll learn about elephant body language and how to play with them – swapping unethical elephant rides for playful mud baths and feeding time. 

Most sanctuaries you book with also offer transport to and from the location (often straight from your hotel doorstep) as most of them are a 30-60 minute drive from the centre of Chiang Mai. 

Our recommendation: One of our personal favourites is the Elephant Retirement Park – Chiang Mai’s first ethical elephant sanctuary. Founded by Adulwit Khamya, better known as Noi. His passion for elephant care and rescue will be sure to pull on your heartstrings.

Hike Up Doi Suthep (Wat Phra That)

Be sure to visit Chiang Mai’s most iconic and breathtaking temple, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Join a guided tour (or hiking club!) where you’ll follow in the footsteps of the pilgrims who climb up the 309 steps (or take the funicular railway up) to reach the 600-year-old golden ‘chedi’ and stupa on the hilltop for panoramic views of the city. The journey up the winding mountain road is an experience in itself!

Getting there: Doi Suthep is around 15 kilometres from Chiang Mai and sits over 1,000 metres above sea level. Most tours included your journey to and from the temple, or you can choose to make your own way there by jumping in the famous ‘red wagons’ you’ll see everywhere in Chiang Mai.

Visit Doi Inthanon National Park

Explore one of Thailand’s original national parks Doi Inthanon – the highest mountain in the whole of Thailand! Perfect for adventurers and culture enthusiasts alike, this national park boasts lush tropical forests, majestic waterfalls, colourful flower gardens, and a wide range of animal species. In fact, it’s probably the best place to bird watch in the whole of Thailand. Chedis (monuments) dedicated to the King and Queen can be found atop the peak of the mountain along with panoramic views of Chiang Mai.

Tip: Doi Inthanon rises to a height of 2565 meters (8, 415 feet) above sea level. Be sure to bring a jacket as this altitude means that temperatures on Doi Inthanon are refreshingly brisk all year round and below freezing during the cool season (October to February).

Try An Authentic Khao Soi

Whilst Bangkok has Pad Thai, Chiang Mai has its own best-kept secret and speciality dish. Khao Soi is a deeply fragrant, coconut milk-based stew with crispy noodles and finished with either chicken, beef, or tofu. You can find the dish sold at most street vendors, markets, and restaurants – each place tends to have their own special spin on the dish!

RELIGIOUS

Explore Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara  

Wat Chedi Luang is another must-see temple, and much more easily accessible than most. Located inside Chiang Mai’s Old City walls, and a decent walking distance from many of the top hotels, Luang is famous for once housing the Emerald Buddha, one of the most important religious relics in Thailand.

Built between the 14-15th centuries, Luang was once the largest building in Lanna (an old Kingdom which controlled Northern Thailand) at a height of 82 metres. In 1545, a large earthquake substantially damaged the chedi and it now measures around 60 meters high.  Then when the Burmese captured Chiang Mai five years later, the temple was left to fall into a ruin. 

Reconstructed in the 1990s, financed by UNESCO and the Japanese government, the temple is now an active worship place – so you will still see monks going about their daily work as well as several Buddha shrines.

Check Out Wat Phra Singh

Wat Phra Singh stands as one of the most visually impressive temples in Chiang Mai. Also known as the Temple of the Lion Buddha, there are 700 monks living in the temple who will regularly talk to tourists. 

The construction of this Buddhist temple and monastery began in 1345. It was later abandoned and came under serious disrepair during the Burmese occupation between the 16th and 18th centuries. Restoration eventually began in 1925 and again in 2002. The temple is now a stunning example of Lanna temple architecture. 

Visit Wat Phra That Doi Kham

Also known as the Golden Mountain Temple, Wat Phra That Doi Kham is located at the top of a hill to the south-west of the city. It is named after the forested mountain on which it stands and is most well-known for its 56 foot tall Buddha draped in gold robes. The complex dates back to over 1,000 years ago. 

There are 300 steps to climb to reach the temple and the staircase is decorated with a serpent on each side. There is also a cable car to the top if needed. Once you reach the temple, you’ll be greeted with stunning panoramic views of Chiang Mai city. 

Explore Wat Umong Tunnels

Wat Umong is Chiang Mai’s only forest temple. Built in 1297 by King Maglai of the Lan Na dynasty, the temple is famous for its ancient meditation tunnels, old ruins, and large unpainted stupa. There are around 15 acres of wooded grounds where you can feed fish, turtles, and ducks that live in the temple’s large pond. The temple is located at the foot of Doi Pui Mountain. 

Tip: If you look on the ceiling of the tunnels, you may be able to see some old drawings of elephants and temples thought to date back to the 13th or 14th Century.

Visit Wat Sri Suphan (Silver Temple)

Most commonly known as the Silver Temple due to its handcrafted silver decoration which completely covers the temple. Wat Sri Suphan was originally built around 1500, with some repairs being made in silver from a local silversmith village for which it was built. The temple was only completely covered in silver in 2008. 

Tip: During your visit here, you may be able to see artists in the silver studios and talk to the Monks who roam about the temples a few days a week.

Go On a Night Safari

The Chiang Mai Night Safari offers an experience you will never forget! Located about 12km from central Chiang Mai, this safari is modelled closely on the Singapore version and allows you to get up close and personal with rare nocturnal animals which you wouldn’t normally see throughout the day.

The tour lasts about an hour and is completely safe, with any dangerous animals being kept back in an enclosed space. 

Visit The Hmong Hill Tribe Village

Just a few kilometres from both Doi Pui and Doi Suthep, the hill tribe villages near Chiang Mai give a unique and fascinating look at a simpler way of life. The history of the Hmong is something of a mystery, though they probably originated from Tibet. 

The Hmong tribe people are fiercely independent people and are now widely spread around Asia. And thanks to their involvement in the Vietnam War, also in parts of the US. Near the village, you’ll also find a small waterfall, a big souvenir market, a number of restaurants, and a small museum about the Hmong culture and history.

Learn to Cook Organic Thai Dishes

Watch a Muay Thai Boxing Fight

Besides famous mountain temples and cooking classes, Chiang Mai is probably most well known for Muay Thai fighting. A number of different venues show fights most days of the week. There are normally around five fights each night, starting in the evening. Grab a Chiang beer and enjoy!

Explore Huay Kaew Waterfall and Swimming Hole

Huay Kaew Waterfall is an epic jungle waterfall located nearby to Chiang Mai Zoo and is one of the easiest waterfalls to reach in the city. There are two levels to the waterfall, both accessible by a short jungle hike. At the top level, you’ll find a swimming hole to cool off in. Towards the end of the dry season, the water levels are quite low, so you’ll need to plan your visit around that. 

Brave the Pongyang Adventure Park

Located around an hours drive from Chiang Mai, this treetop adventure park located in Chiang Mai’s jungle is a must-visit for adrenaline junkies. Within the park, there are eight zip lines, monkey ladders, wooden bridges, and abseiling to get your heart rate going! Plus, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the jungle. Be sure to ride the jungle roller coaster where you have full control of the speed – reaching up to 40km per hour!

Chill Out in San Kamphaeng Hot Springs

Fancy a day off from visiting temples and hiking up mountains? Treat yourself to a day spent relaxing in the hot springs of San Kamphaeng. Around an hour’s drive from Chiang Mai, the springs are located within a beautiful, well-maintained park heavily decorated with colourful flowers. You can even buy a basket of eggs to boil in the springs.

Visit the Royal Park Rajapruek

Built to celebrate the 60th anniversary of King Rama IX’s accession to the throne, and his 80th birthday, the Royal Park Rajapruek has 23 themed gardens donated by international governments. There are also nine Thai gardens and six ‘corporate’ gardens in this 200-acre piece of land. You could honestly spend hours here and still not see everything!

Take A Stroll In Buak Hard Park

Located in the South West corner of the old city, Buak Hard park is the most popular park in the city of Chiang Mai. You’ll find both locals and tourists here jogging, doing yoga, sunbathing, playing badminton, and even lifting weights in the gym area. There are often many festivals here, including the annual flower festival. The park is open most of the day, but we recommend visiting for either sunrise or sunset.

Visit The Night Bazaar Market

Best known for its handicrafts and portrait paintings, the Night Bazaar of Chiang Mai is the main shopping hotspot in the city. You’ll find typical market goods sold here including jewelry, souvenirs, clothing, and more.

The market is usually open from around sunset to late evening and is located on the east side of Chiang Mai’s old city walls. There are hundreds of exciting and unique stalls and vendors to see, so spare a few hours for this one!

Explore Ploen Ruedee Night Market

Chiang Mai’s iconic Night Bazaar has been the most popular tourist destination in the city for 50 years. But in 2014, Ploen Ruedee became a new addition to the marketplace. Located in the heart of the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar, this new hotspot offers trendy food trucks, entertainment, and live music. Expect a relaxing atmosphere under the city’s stars. 

Visit Tha Phae Sunday Walking Street

The Sunday Walking Market is a large market located in the centre of the old city walls of Chiang Mai. The market is about one kilometre long, starting at Tha Phae Gate. It offers music, beer, crafts, clothing, and all of your typical tourist market goods. 

Tip: The market is open every Sunday evening between 4 pm until around midnight. The best time to visit is at sunset. This is when the market comes to life after dark with live music, Thai dancers, and colourful lights. Plus, if you get sore feet, there are plenty of stalls offering thai foot massages!

CULTURE

Ride in a Songthaew

Whilst Bangkok is famous for tuk-tuks, Chiang Mai has its own iconic transport to get you around the city. A Songthaew is a converted pick-up truck with two rows of backbenches. In Thai, the word “songthaew” literally means ‘two rows’.

The jeeps can fit between 8-10 adults inside and allow for 1-2 people to hang off the back. Be warned though, there are no seatbelts in the truck, just bars to hold onto. The back door is also open with no door. But it’s all part of the thrill!

Tip: The trucks are usually shared with other travellers and are easy to hail down from anywhere in the city. 

Celebrate Thai New Year at Songkran Festival

If you’re lucky enough to be in Chiang Mai in time to celebrate the Thai New Year, then the Songkran festival is a must! It is without a doubt the biggest celebrated festivals in Thailand and happens between the 13-15th of April every year. Expect to get wet! Locals and tourists fill the streets with buckets of icy water and water pistols ready to soak passers-by. 

Only monks, babies and elderly get free passes to this festival, but all tourists are welcome to buy a ticket! The most popular places to hangout during Songkran festival are around the moat, canals, Ping River, and Chiang Mai Gate.

Visit Wat Pho And See The Reclining Buddha

Wat Pho is a must for any traveller in Bangkok for many reasons. It is best known for the 46-metre long reclining gold Buddha that sleeps beautifully in its temple, as well as being home to one of the largest collections of Buddha images in Thailand. 

Inside the temple, there are 108 bowls which you can buy coins for at the entrance of the temple. The history behind this is that Buddha completed 108 positive actions on his way to becoming perfect. Wat Pho is even first on the list of the six temples in Thailand which are classed as the highest grade of the first-class royal temples. 

Fun fact: Wat Pho is known as the birthplace of the traditional Thai massage. You can even stop to receive a traditional Thai Massage whilst you’re at the temple!

Explore The Grand Palace Complex

No trip to Bangkok would be complete without a visit to the world-famous Grand Palace complex. From 1782, this became the official place of residence of the Kings of Siam (and then Thailand) up until 1925. It was then opened to the public for tours and used to host many royal ceremonies and state functions every year. The Palace is still the official place of residence for visiting foreign officials. 

The land that the palace was built on in 1782 was originally occupied by a Chinese community. King Rama I ordered the community to relocate to an area outside of the city walls so that they could build the palace there. The community relocated to what is now Bangkok’s famous Chinatown. 

Fact: Many of the buildings in the palace were partially constructed out of old building materials from the old capital, Ayutthaya, and ferried down the Chao Phraya by a barge.

Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha)

Located within the Grand Palace Complex is the amazing Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew). The temple was originally housed in Wat Arun, and transported from there when King Rama I moved the capital across the river from Thonburi. The Emerald Buddha is made out of Jade clothed in gold, and about 66 cm tall. It is regarded as the most sacred and holy Buddhist temple in Thailand and the construction began in 1783. 

Tip: Wat Phra Kaew is located within the grounds of The Grand palace and most tours will include a visit to this too.

Marvel at Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)

There are more than 31,000 Buddhist temples scattered across Thailand and Wat Arun stands out from the rest thanks to its iconic structure. Otherwise known as the Temple of Dawn, the world-famous temple derives its name after Arun – the Hindu God of dawn. It also represents the honour of both the literal and symbolic founding of a new Ayutthaya. 

Before the capital was moved across the river, the temple was located in the grounds of the then royal palace. The temple was abandoned for a long time, before being restored in the 19th century. It is beautifully decorated with colourful porcelain that glistens in the right light – tourists are even encouraged to climb up the temple!

Explore Bangkok By Boat

With so much time spent on your feet in Bangkok, why not sit back and relax on the city’s river cruise boat? Taking you right through the heart of the city, it’s the perfect way to see so much of the city in a short amount of time. Some of the main stops include the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, Khao San Road, Iconisam shopping centre, and Asiatique (which is great for a drink & food by the river).  

It’s common for tourists to use this as their main form of transport whilst in Bangkok. It’s the perfect way to see most of Bangkok’s iconic landmarks in under an hour and will cost you around 120 Baht (£3/$4) pp. 

Tip: Once you’ve got your bearings in Bangkok, we recommend travelling via the local boats which are cheaper and allow you to observe the locals’ way of life, who use the boat to commute to and from work themselves. 

RELIGIOUS

Explore Wat Benchamabophit (Marble Temple)

One of Bangkok’s most beautiful and significant temples, the Marble Temple (or Wat Ben) was built from white Italian marble and is classified as a first-class Royal temple.

Its official name translates to ‘the temple of the fifth King located near Dusit Palace’. You’ll even spot the temple on the back of the five baht coin! Construction began in 1899 and the ashes of King Rama V (who ordered its construction) are kept at the base of the bronze Buddha.

Visit The Temple Of The Golden Mount (Wat Saket)

Wat Saket, or the Temple of the Golden Mount, is beautifully located on a 90-metre-tall man-made hill. Located in Bangkok’s Old Town, the temple is dedicated to the Ayutthaya era. Climb to the top to see the gleaming gold chedi and unbeatable panoramic views of the city! Visitors are welcomed all year round, but it can get pretty crowded in November during the week-long Loy Krathong festival. 

The Vultures of Wat Saket: In the past, the Siamese had a tradition whereby the dead could not be cremated within the city walls. Wat Saket was located outside of the city walls and was therefore used to cremate the dead. It was the main receiving ground of many dead bodies. When cholera hit, they were unable to cremate every dead body and some were left out in the open, where vultures devoured the dead bodies. Cholera hit every dry season for decades and the temple was the main place where the vultures ate. 

Visit The Home Of Jim Thompson

Be sure to take a canal boat to visit the Jim Thompson Museum in Bangkok to explore the home of the late American architect and entrepreneur who transformed the Thai silk industry. 

Jim Thomspon originally visited Thailand on a business trip and immediately fell in love with the culture, in particular the Thai silk industry. He ended up moving to Bangkok and built his own home in 1959. The house was mainly designed to showcase his impressive collection of traditional Southeast Asian art and Buddhist statues.

The disappearance of Jim Thompson after his afternoon walk in 1967 still remains an unsolved mystery. This is not one to be missed!

Tip: You can pay on arrival at the museum and your ticket price includes a free guided tour.

Explore the Endless Rooftop Bars

It’s no secret that Bangkok is famous for its nightlife scene. If you fancy something a bit more classy and stylish than the usual Khao San Road, then book a table at one the many rooftop bars in the city and enjoy killer cocktails with an unbeatable panoramic view of Bangkok’s skyline. A must-visit is the Sky Bar at Lebua where The Hangover Part II was filmed! Just be sure to book in advance so you get the best seat in the house!

Drink and Eat at Khao San Road

Whilst you’re in Bangkok, be sure to visit the world-famous backpacker area, Khao San Road. This strip of bars and clubs sees between 20,000-50,000 tourists visit it every day! You’ll find some of the best bars and clubs in the city here, with street food, fast food and restaurants dotted everywhere. The market here includes everything from clothes, to DVDs, and even fake ID documents (you didn’t hear it from us).

Dine and Shop at Asiatique Riverfront

On the end of the riverboat tour line, you’ll find the Asiatique riverfront. It was once a bustling international trade port and is now a shopping centre with 1,500 boutiques and 40 restaurants. Stop off here for dinner and drinks on the riverfront and watch the amazing sunset. 

Tip: Most restaurants and bars only open in the evening though, from around 4-5 pm.

Go Shopping at Iconsiam

One of the largest shopping malls in Asia, Iconism is home to over 100 restaurants and 500 shops across six floors. You’ll find luxury designer brands such as Louis Vuitton, as well as high street brands such as Zara. There’s even an indoor floating market! If you board the river tour boat, you’ll pass Iconism and can stop off directly outside. 

Visit Chatuchak Weekend Market

One of the largest markets in Asia, the Chatuchak Weekend Market is home to over 15,000 stalls and welcomes over 200,000 visitors every weekend! Open every Friday, Saturday & Sunday, you’ll find here rare art, jewellery, clothing, accessories, and endless food options. 

Tip: It can be quite overwhelming in Chatuchak, so be sure to grab a free map of the market from one of the information desks. 

Explore Rot Fai Ratchada Night Market

Open every evening Thursday until Sunday, Rot Fai Ratchada Night Market is the perfect place to spend your evening whilst watching local haggle and trade.

The famous market splits into avenues with hundreds of market stalls, stocking everything from clothes, shoes, handbags, souvenirs, and endless food options. There are even rows of bars with music and bright lights if you fancy a night out in the market. 

More locals visit Rot Fai Ratchada than tourists, so you’ll find that the prices are cheaper compared to the other markets in Bangkok. 

CULTURAL

Experience a Famous Thai Massage

No trip to Thailand would be complete without experiencing a famous Thai massage for yourself, and Bangkok is home to some of the best massage parlours!

After all the walking and exploring you’ll be doing on your travels, a Thai massage will give you a new lease of life whilst making you feel invigorated as well as balanced. There are parlous absolutely everywhere, so it won’t be hard to find one. 

Tip: the average price of a good Thai massage is around £8-10 for full body. You can have a Thai foot massage for around £3. Just be sure to tip after!

Visit Chinatown (Yaowarat Road)

Be sure to visit one of the largest Chinatowns in the world – right in Bangkok! Get lost amongst the many market alleys and endless street food vendors with influences of both Thai and Chinese cultures. 

Due to famine, Chinese people migrated to Bangkok and originally settled where the Grand Palace is today. They were later ordered to resettle in Yaowarat Road (now Chinatown) by King Rama I when he moved his capital across the river. 

Tip: Yaowarat Road is the main road to visit in Chinatown. Built in 1891, the road itself is It’s about 1.5 kilometres long and has some of the best places to eat and drink in Bangkok. 

Visit Art in Paradise Museum

Prepare to have your mind blown at Art in Paradise – the First 3D and “illusion” museum in Bangkok. Through the use of painting techniques such as shading and borders, artists can trick our eyes to believing something is 3D. 

The museum is divided into two floors over 2,500 square meters and features 150 interactive paintings. There are six permanent exhibition zones to explore in the museum: aqua, safari, classic art, fantasy, nature, and modern art.

Tip: Art in Paradise is near to the Cultural Centre MRT station – so combine this with Rot Fai Ratchada Night Market. 

OUTDOORS

Take a Stroll in Lumpini Park

Escape the noise, bustle and heavy pollution of Bangkok’s city and take a stroll in the beautiful Lumpini Park. This huge park was created in the 1920s and features a stunning artificial lake with swans.

Many locals use the space to exercise, particularly early morning runners. Keep your eyes out for the giant lizards inside the park – some of them growing close to 10 feet long!

Experience the stalls collapse and transform as a train passes through – tuck in tight!

Buy a ticket from Maeklong station to the next stop along which will allow you to ride the traditional train that passes right through the market itself. Smile and wave as hundreds of locals and tourists cram tight into the side of the train tracks and wave as you pass!

Visit Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

Hue was Vietnam’s capital on two separate occasions, and many of the town’s finest buildings were destroyed during the American War. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this charming town has so much to offer.

From exploring ancient architecture in the Imperial City and discovering tombs of the ancient emperors, history lovers will find a huge amount to enjoy in this ancient town.

MUST-DO

Explore the Imperial Citadel

One of the main attractions in Hue is the Imperial Citadel. This UNESCO World Heritage Site and capital of past Nguyen emperors has withstood the Vietnam War, the Battle of Hue, and numerous tragedies over the years. Construction began in 1804, and the old city walls are around 10km long.

Located inside the Citadel, travel back in time and rediscover what was once Vietnam’s Imperial City. The city is enclosed by a wall and moat which are around 2.5 kilometres long. Much of the city was destroyed (especially during the Vietnam war) but the Imperial City stands as a colourful and ornate palace complex visited by thousands each day. 

Explore The To Mieu Temple Complex

Constructed in 1821 in commemoration of former emperors of the Nguyen dynasty, The Mieu Temple Complex contains personal items and portraits of its ten emperors. It is located in the southwest of the Imperial City inside Hue’s Imperial Citadel and is considered to be the most crucial architecture of the Imperial Citadel.

See the Ngo Mon Gate

Otherwise known as the Meridian Gate, the Ngo Mon is the main gate to the Imperial City and is where the former Emperors would watch troop movements from. The emperor also appeared here on important occasions, most notably for the promulgation of the lunar calendar. Built in 1833, it was modelled after the Meridian Gate of the Forbidden City in Beijing, though it is much smaller in scale than its equivalent in north China. 

Visit the Cung Dien Tho

Built in 1804, the Cung Dien Tho served as the former residence for the Queen Mother and is located in the outer courtyard of the Imperial City. It provides a great insight into the old days of Hue as it is one of the most intact and elegant buildings that survived through the Vietnam War.

Go to The Royal Theatre

Built in 1826 for members of the royal family only, the Duyet Thi Duong Royal Theatre is the oldest working theatre in Vietnam. You can come here to watch a performance of traditional Vietnamese dance and music, or you can book a tour to view the spacious galleries here. The performances usually last around 45 minutes each.

ANCIENT TOMBS

One of the main reasons why so many people visit Hue is because of the tombs of the Ancient Emperors that are dotted all over the city. No trip to Hue would be complete without visiting some of these Tombs. Here are the ones worth visiting…

Tomb of Tu Duc

A 20-minute taxi ride along the perfume river lies one of the most popular and impressive of the royal mausoleums, the Tomb of Emperor Tu Duc.

Designed by himself before his death and built under forced labour and at an enormous expense, Tu Duc reigned for 35 years; the longest of any monarch of the Nguyen dynasty. All 200 servants who buried Tu Duc were then beheaded to keep the exact location of his remains secret.

Tomb of Minh Mang

The Minh Mang Royal Tomb in Hue, Vietnam, is the final resting place of one of the Nguyen Dynasty’s loyal and dedicated Confucians. Emperor Minh Mang reigned from 1820 to 1840 and the tome built in his honour was built by his successor with around 10,000 workers.

Tip: You will enter through Dai Hong Mon Gate where there are three doors. The central door has only ever been opened once – to admit the body of the emperor…

Tomb of Khai Dinh

Visit the tomb that was built between 1920-1931 in honour of Khai Dinh, the Penultimate emperor of Vietnam from 1916-1925. Khai Dinh worked closely with the French and considered to be nothing more than a salaried employee of the French government and therefore extremely unpopular with the people of Vietnam.

The tomb is a lot smaller than others but much more lavishly designed and features a blend of Eastern & Western architecture.

Tomb of Thieu Tri

Of the more accessible tombs in Hue, Thiệu Trị is probably the least-visited. Emporer Thieu Tri Ruled for 7 years and didn’t have a prior burial preparation. He wished for his descendants not to build a lavish tomb, but his successor made it relatively grand. This is the only dynastic tomb that isn’t enclosed by a wall and the site is cleanly divided between temple (for worship) and crypt (the resting place). Overshadowed by the tombs of his predecessor and successor, you’ll likely have Thieu Tri’s tomb all to yourself.

RELIGIOUS

Tu Hieu Pagoda

Discover the Tu Hieu Pagoda, also known as the ‘root temple’ of the famous Zen master, Thich Nhat Hanh, who studied here in the 1940’s. He lived in exile for more than 40 years and was only permitted to return in 2005. Today, 70 monks live here and welcome visitors. You can listen to their chanting at numerous times each day. The pagoda was built in 1843.

Nam Giao Esplanade

Also known as The Esplanade of Sacrifice, this imperial altar situated in the south of Hue was once known as the most important religious site in Vietnam. 

Dedicated to Heaven and Earth, the complex was visited by the monarchs of the Nguyen dynasty for annual ceremonies of prayer. They would also make animal sacrifices here and make offerings. The Esplanade itself is similar to a promenade, surrounded by a beautiful pine tree forest.

CULTURE

Visit the Royal Antiquities Museum

Established in 1923, the Royal Antiquities Museum was one of the first museums in Hue. It features rare objects such as porcelain, bronze wares, royal attires, and musical instruments from The Collection of Nguyen Dynasty. It is now located in the former Long An Palace, just outside the Imperial City. 

FOOD AND SHOPPING

Explore Dong Ba Market

Dong Ba Market is one of the oldest places in Hue but still a thriving centre of city commerce full of traditional Vietnamese souvenirs. Get lost in the bustle of this famous market as you eat some of the best street food in hue and shop for jewellery and traditional souvenirs. The market is still extremely important to the economy of the city as a wholesale market and thousands of customers visit the market every day. 

Visit the Healing the Wounded Heart Shop

Pick up some amazing souvenirs for family and friends back home whilst helping the local community at The Healing in the Wounded Heart Shop. Founded in 2009, the shop sells a range of handicrafts, accessories and  clothing made by disabled artisans from recycled items.

They offer the artisans fair wages, medical insurance, housing, daily meals, plus a recreational allowance. 100% of the profits are funneled back into the local community and also help to fund heart surgery for local impoverished children. 

DAYS OUT

Visit The An Bang Cemetery (City of Ghosts)

About a fifty minute drive from Hue, you’ll find one of the best off-the-beaten-track experiences in Vietnam. The An Bang Cemetery is also known as ‘The City of Ghosts’ due to the hundreds of colossal, coloured tombs that lie here next to a deserted sandy beach. Some even have their own bathrooms and kitchens! 

The building began in 1995 and local residents continued building more and more extravagant tombs for deceased family members over the years. If you want to see something unique whilst in Vietnam, this really is the place to go! 

Tip: The cemetery is located just behind the fishing village of An Bang, about 20km past Thuan An beach (just take the left turn after the small Vinh An Hospital and follow the road till it ends). It is much easier to access via motorbike than a car if you are able to hire one. 

Visit Thuy Tien Lake Abandoned Water Park

If you’re looking for some adventure off the beaten track of temples and pagodas, it’s definitely worth paying a visit to the Thuy Tien Lake Abandoned Water Park.

One of Vietnam’s unofficial must-see attractions, this eerie monument hidden in the jungle was abandoned just two years after opening in 2004 for reasons that still remain a mystery. Coated in graffiti and overgrown forestry, this crumbling playground has become a popular hangout spot for adventurous backpackers, despite locals warning of its supernatural activities… 

Ride the Famous Hai Van Pass 

The Hai Van Pass is undoubtedly one of the top attractions in Vietnam. It sits around 500 meters above sea level, making it the highest pass in the whole of Vietnam. It was made ever more popular amongst tourists after its appearance on Top Gear, who dubbed it ‘one of the best coastal roads in the world’.

Brave the infamous 13 mile long winding roads and enjoy panoramic views of Da Nang City and the South China Sea. On the pass, there’s even a fort that was built during the French colonial period and used as a bunker during the Vietnam War by American and South Vietnamese troops.

How to get there:

If you’re feeling brave enough, you can rent out a one-way scooter for the best experience, or book a 3-hour coach journey. 

Hai Van Pass can also be experienced on the train from Hue if you don’t fancy braving the notoriously winding roads. Plus, this is probably one of the most relaxing and scenic train journeys in Vietnam with stunning views of the coastline.

NATURE 

Chill Out On Thuan An Beach

If you fancy getting off-the-beaten-track and chilling out for the day, spend a day at one of Vietnam’s lesser-known beaches, Thuan An. Just a short taxi ride away from Hue, this underdeveloped and beautiful beach boasts clean white sands that rival even some of Australia’s coasts. It’s great for swimming with the kids too thanks to its calm waves. 

Watch the Purple Sunset at Tam Giang Lagoon

Tam Giang Lagoon is about 15 kilometres from Hue City. Join a full-day guided tour where you can watch the traditional fishing activities of the lagoon, see artisans weaving bamboo crafts, interact with the locals, cruise across the lagoon by boat, go fishing, and explore the village and paddy fields by bike. The highlight of the lagoon though is the sunset which turns the whole sky purple. A truly breathtaking moment! 

Go On A Boat Trip Down The Perfume River

The Perfume River (Song Huong River) is undoubtedly one of the most famous waterways in Vietnam. Famed for its floral aroma of blooming flowers that fall into the water in autumn, the river offers stunning scenic views of Hue’s most iconic temples and villages. 

Either walk the riverway or take a 45-minute cruise along the river itself. Most day tours which take you from the city to Thien Mu Pagoda include a boat trip down the river.

Cycle Around the City

Experience Hue like a local and hire out a bike (or join a cycling tour) to explore the city. It’s a great way to see the city in a short amount of time. Ride alongside the picturesque Perfume River, marvel at the Imperial City and maybe even venture out to discover the Tu Hieu Pagoda. 

Tip: Most hotels provide bikes to rent for free, but otherwise it’s pretty inexpensive to hire them out in the city. 

Enjoy a Chilled Day at Bach Ma National Park

Around 50 km from the centre of Hue is the stunning Bach Ma National Park. Here, you’ll find 132 kinds of mammals – three of which were only discovered in the 1990s.

This national park had a hard time during the Vietnam war as it’s on the border between the North and South. The Viet Minh dug tunnels here (the Bach Ma tunnels) which were used between 1973 and 1975. They are now occupied by insects and snakes. Be sure to visit the French era hill station too and enjoy the views over the valleys and Hai Van Pass itself. 

HISTORY 

Visit Thien Mu Pagoda 

Also known as the Pagoda of the Celestial Lady, the iconic Thien Mu is regarded as an unofficial symbol of the city. The symbolic 7-story structure built in the early 17th century inspired countless folktales and legends. Located around 5km from the citadel, it’s easy to walk here yourself and do a self-guided tour. However, it’s best to join a guided tour which also includes a relaxing boat trip down the Perfume River first.

Walk Over The Thanh Toan Bridge

Reportedly around 250 years old, this Japanese footbridge is the most famous bridge in Hue. Mrs Tran Thi Dao, the wife of a high-ranking Mandarin, established the bridge in order to improve the transportation and communication in her village.

Thanh Toan tile bridge is one of the rare tiled-roof bridges left in Vietnam and it stretches for 17 meters over the beautiful Nhu Y River. You will find it located in an ancient (now residential) village, about 7 kilometres to the east of Hue in Thuy Thanh Commune (Huong Thuy district). 

Visit the Ho Quyen Tiger Fighting Area

Built in 1830, this abandoned fighting arena was once used to hold both tiger and elephant fights for kings, mandarins, and the royal family. The arena is about three kilometres outside of the centre of Hue and was built during the time of the Minh Mang Dynasty. 

Thankfully, you won’t find any more fights here as they were stopped in the 1900s. You can still explore the grounds though, and if you look closely enough, you’ll be able to spot claw marks from the tigers on the crumbling walls.

Explore the Demilitarized Zone of Vietnam

Take a step back in time to the years fighting against the American invasion and explore the must-see Demilitarized Zone of Vietnam. Discover the battleground demarcation line between the Communist North and free South that divided Vietnam into two separate states on this emotional journey through one of Vietnam’s most significant landmarks. 

Join a full-day guided tour where you’ll also explore the Horror Highway, Long Hung Church, Quang Tri Ancient Citadel, Dakrong Bridge, Khe Sanh Combat Base, Hien Luong Bridge, Ben Hai River, and Doc Mieu Base. Hoi An is especially unique as it is one of the few cities in Vietnam that managed to escape most of the bombing during the Vietnam War, despite it being the third-largest city in the country. This means that so much beautiful architecture still remains, especially in the UNESCO-listed Old Town.

Explore the Old Town

Hoi An’s charming Old Town is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to the 800 historic buildings here, with some said to date back to as far as 2,000 years ago. Eighteen of these buildings are open to visitors and require an Old Town ticket for admission (the fee goes towards funding conservation work).  

Hoi An’s Old Town a fine example of a well-preserved South-East Asian trading port dating back from the 15th-19th centuries. It was considered by Japanese and Chinese as the best destination for trading in all of South East Asia. Soon after though, Da Nang became the more important centre of trade, leaving Hoi An hardly being touched for around 200 years. For this reason, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So explore, grab some Vietnamese coffee, and admire the sights and beauty Old Town has to offer.

Admire the Japanese Covered Bridge

The Japanese Covered Bridge is located in the centre of the city and is widely known as the symbol of Hoi An, as well as being a romantic hotspot amongst couples thanks to its beautiful riverside setting.  

Dating back to the 16th century, it was constructed by the Japanese community to link with the Chinese quarters of Hoi An. The bridge is around 12 meters long and is famous for its ornate carvings, many of which are in the shape of monkeys and dogs.

Visit Phung Hung Old House

Built in 1780 by a Vietnamese merchant, Phung Hung is a typical commercial house you would have found in Hoi An in the 18th Century. It was once used as a shop on the ground floor, selling cinnamon, pepper, salt, silk, chinaware, and glassware. Today it’s the family’s living room, and the current owner is the 8th descendant of the original owner.

Go To Hoi An Museum of History & Culture

Located in the picturesque Quan Am Pagoda, one of Vietnam’s oldest pagodas built in 1653, this stunning riverside museum contains relics spanning 2,000 years of Hoi An history. 

Most of The Riverside Museum of History and Culture is a celebration of the period when Hoi An was one of the best trading posts, where traders from France, Portugal and the Netherlands mingled with those from Japan, China, Thailand, India and Vietnam along the bustling streets of Hoi An’s old town. 

The museum showcases a range of artefacts such as photographs of local architecture, ceramics and pottery depicting the changing faces of Hoi An including the Champa era dating from 7th-15th centuries and Da Viet from 15th to 19th centuries.

Tour the Tan Ky Family House

To really understand Hoi An’s past, visit the Tan Ky Family House. This two-century-old merchants residence has literally stood the test of time and is one of Hoi An’s most well-preserved building.

Built in 1741, it is an example of a merchants residence from the 18th century that has since been passed down through 7 generations of the Tan Ky family.  Head into its courtyard to see the markings on its wall from the height of flood falls that ruined most of the city.

Get A Suit Made

Hoi An is otherwise known as the tailoring capital of Vietnam and is the reason so many people travel from across the country to get their clothes made or tailored. Understand why the textiles industry is so popular in Hoi An by heading to the markets yourself to get your own garments made.

You can get a 2 piece suit for around £75. Or, take a picture of a dress or top you’d like making and let the designers work their magic.

With so many tailors to choose from, ensure you have enough time to browse, pick a tailor, and wait for your alterations. It never comes out perfect the first time, so allow extra some time for a few changes. Three fittings across three days usually works out best.

Located in Quang Nam Province, around two kilometres from the centre of the city, is Hoi An Silk Village. There are several ancient homes in the village where you can learn from locals artisans about the traditional manufacturing process that this part of Vietnam is known for.

Learn to Cook Vietnamese Food

After dinner, step into the side streets and explore Hoi An’s Night Market which comes to life from 5pm. Zigzag through the 300-metre long street packed with banana pancake carts and shuffling tour groups. Once the sun has set, head to the row of stalls illuminated with hundreds of colourful silk lanterns. 

Shop at Hoi An Central Market

Along the beautiful banks of the Thu Bon River lies the bustling Hoi An Central Market. Here, you find everything from silk pieces and textiles, local food, aromatic spices, and fresh flowers. Enjoy seafood served straight from the riverfront. Be sure to try some street food too which is sold out of carts in the market.

Open from 8am-7pm (but some stalls stay open a lot later). 

Explore My Son Holy Land

Lovers of architecture and ancient civilizations will enjoy a full-day tour to the South of Vietnam to explore one of Southeast Asia’s greatest archaeological sites, My Son Holy Sanctuary. A cluster of partially ruined Hindu temples that have long been abandoned, though once a thriving religious site of the early Champa tribe, dating back between the 4th and 13th century. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the sanctuary features stone sculptures of Hindu deities and towers amid the tropical jungle.

Visit The Fujian Hall Assembly Hall

Built by the Fujian Chinese community in Hoi An in the 17th Century, the Fujian Assembly Hall is considered one of the most sacred and opulent places in Hoi An. It was originally designed as an assembly hall and meeting place for residents from Fujian in China to socialise. It was later transformed into a temple. 

The main hall here is covered in carvings of mythical Chinese creatures, and there is also a large courtyard with carved statues of 12 Midwives. Legend has it, if you pray in the Assembly Hall, you will be blessed with fertility.

Tour Quan Cong Temple

Founded in 1653, the Quan Cong Temple is dedicated to Quan Cong himself. A Chinese general, he was worshipped in Hoi An due to his qualities of justice for all, loyalty, integrity and sincerity. When Hoi An was the main trading port it once was, businessmen used to make commitments in here as Quan was considered the God of “trustworthiness”. 

Tip: You can make an offering to the general and a caretaker will strike a bronze bowl to commemorate the moment.

Take a Trip to Cam Kim Island

History buffs and furniture enthusiasts would also not want to miss a trip to the Kim Bong Carpentry Village. Accessed via boat, this traditional village boasts unique carpentry styles and quality souvenirs surrounded by lush rice paddies and cornfields. Accompanied by a local English speaking guide, you will learn about both old and existing communities that play important roles in the development of the country. Explore Hoi An by Bike

Unlike many cities in Vietnam, cars and even motorbikes are banned from the centre of Hội An. Bicycles are truly the best way to explore the surrounding rice paddies, traditional villages, floating bridges, temples, and even beaches. Explore Tra Que Vegetable Village

Just 3km away from the city centre, you’ll find a fresh veg-village that lies between the town and An Bang beach. This agricultural area and community is known for the highest-quality vegetables due to the use of locally harvested algae to help vegetables grow, rather than chemicals. The village offers everything from cooking classes, to foot massages, but it’s possible to just explore the island, trying to identify vegetables and chatting with local farmers. You can’t get much fresher, local produce than this!

Chill Out on Cua Dai Beach

Find a spot of paradise outside the ancient streets on Hoi An. Cua Dai Beach boasts 3km stretch of perfectly white powdery sands and tropical blue waves. Just 5km from Old Town, this beach is perfect for chilling out, swimming, and eating fresh in the seafront restaurants. There are even changing huts on the beach along with a few bungalows here and there.

Join A Basket Boat Tour of the Coconut Forest

Discover the greener side of Vietnam on this off-the-beaten-track experience that takes you through the surreal coconut forests and local bamboo-making villages.

It is rumoured that the basket boats originated as a way for local fishermen to avoid paying taxes during the French colonial period. Whilst it may look a bit scary, it’s a safe way to explore the maze-like network of channels, canals & coconut palms. The basket boats are built using bamboo, cow dung & waterproof resin from tree sap. You’re likely to spot up to a thousand of the boats in the water at once!

Join onto a guided tour, where you’ll cycle through lush vegetation and rice paddies. Jump inside a handmade bamboo boat with your local guide, taking you through the seven-hectare coconut forest. Paddle the boat yourself as you learn more about your surroundings. Watch villagers put on a splashing water performance right before your eyes.

Eat Fresh at Baby Mustard

Enjoy a fresh taste of Vietnamese food in a completely unique setting in an idyllic restaurant called Baby Mustard. It sits by Tra Que’s market gardens in a backstreet off the road to An Bang Beach. Known for its bamboo structures, the restaurant is located in an open setting overlooking its own vegetable garden and farm. It is one of our favourite spots to eat in Hoi An. Drink on the Riverside 

No trip to Hoi An would be complete without a drink on its famous riverside. Take some time out to admire the way the lights from the lanterns shimmering on the river whilst you sip on a local Hoi An beer… 

Try Cau Lao

This Hoi An noodle speciality has been eaten in the city since the 17th century. Head to our favourite spot just off the main Le Loi Street, Gà Huong, for the best Cau Lao. Or, keep it street and eat in the riverside food market. Try Mrs Thu, on the right as you enter from Tran Phu Street.

Quan Dau Bac

This tiny wedge-shaped restaurant at the western end (no 147) of the main Phan Chau Trinh Street serves platters of traditional Vietnamese dishes. Perfect for trying a mix of local dishes in one sitting! There are often more Vietnamese than westerners here, which is always a good sign when eating local.

Try Street BBQ Food

End the evening with a stroll on the north bank of the Thu Bồn river after dark. Here, you’ll find dozens of little charcoal braziers set up with skewers of thit nuong. Either grilled pork, chicken or prawns come with herbs, greens, and a few rice papers to roll it up in. Dip in a spicy peanut tomato sauce, with a few toasted sesame seeds. They cost around 30-40p each.

MUST-DO

Chill Out On My Khe Beach

No trip to Da Nang would be complete without a chilled beach day on one of Vietnam’s most picturesque beaches. Listed as the ‘one of the most attractive beaches on the planet’ by Forbes magazine, My Khe Beach is renowned for its 20 mile stretch of white sands, clear turquoise waters, and Miami-vibed sporting activities like surfing and volleyball.

Locals are known to exercise & meditate there between 5-6 am on the weekends. Get there early to experience it for yourself!

Relax, sip on some fresh coconut water and soak up some rays on this iconic beach once used by American troops in the Vietnam War for some R&R. There’s even a handful of high-end resorts nearby should you be in need of pampering or luxury dining.

Visit Ba Na Hills

Prepare to be amazed by the hidden gem that sits above the clouds of DaNang, Ba Na Hills. This french-inspired hilltop town resembles a mini-Europe and was built by French colonizers in 1919 as an escape from the Vietnamese heat. We recommend spending a whole day here to give yourself enough time to explore everything (see below for out top picks).

Whilst in Ba Na Hills, take a stroll through the cobblestoned streets of the famed French Village. Once the settlement of French colonizers, the village’s Parisian-style architecture was modelled after genuine 19th Century villages of France. Its renaissance architecture was inspired by real European buildings and is decorated with churches, shops, restaurants, and hotels.

Take a Ride at Fantasy Park

Fantasy Park in Ba Na Hills is an absolute must-visit. This medieval-style amusement park has been dubbed as ‘one of the most modern indoor game centres’ in Asia. It was inspired by two novels by Jules Verne: ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’ and ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’. It is the largest entertainment centre in Vietnam and features rides, arcade games, 3D cinemas, a climbing wall, and a waxwork museum. If you’re an adrenaline-junkie, be sure to brave the Drop Tower.

Take A Stroll Over The Golden Bridge

No trip to Da Nang would be complete without visiting the infamous Golden Bridge. Whilst you’re in Ba Na Hills, take a walk over one of Vietnam’s newest architectural additions, the Golden Bridge. Held up by two enormous stone hands, this 150m long pedestrian bridge provides a breathtaking view of the South China Sea.

Chua Phap Lam Pagoda

Despite the city centre location, Chua Phap Lam Pagoda is extremely peaceful and relaxing. The two-story temple is located amongst beautifully manicured gardens that are dotted with Buddhist sculptures and statues of the Goddess of Mercury, as well as Dai The Chi Bodhisattva.

Built by French priest Louis Vallet in 1923, the Da Nang Cathedral has a reputation as one of the most unique catholic churches in Vietnam – partly because of its perfect pastel-pink hue. Standing at 70 metres, the gothic-style church is also known as Con Ga Church (Rooster Church) due to the imposing bell tower that’s topped with a rooster weathercock.

Check Out Ho Chi Minh Museum (Fifth Military Division Museum)

The Fifth Military Museum, like many others, is devoted to the life of Ho Chi Minh, from his early childhood to becoming a national hero. It offers a glimpse of Vietnam’s tumultuous past with extensive displays of news articles, war relics, and photographs taken by soldiers of the Fifth Military Division. Hidden behind the museum is also a Replica of Ho Chi Minh’s residence & separate museum dedicated to him.

Explore Con Market

Visit the largest and busiest wholesale shopping venue in Da Nang, Con Market. This buzzing market has over 2,000 stalls selling local food, handicrafts, clothes, and tailoring services. Explore the three-storeys of stalls, watching locals haggle and trade.

DAYS OUT

Son Tra Peninsula

Whilst you’re in Da Nang, be sure to spend at least half a day at the breathtaking Son Tra Peninsular. This breath-taking national park is 10km from the centre of Da Nang City boasts long, white sandy beaches with beautiful views over Da Nang City.

Whilst you’re here, be sure to see the Lady Buddha inside the Linh Ung Pagoda courtyard – it’s impossible to miss from My Khe Beach. With a height of 67m equivalent to a 30 story building. Make the most of your time at Son Tar by also going up Son Tra (Monkey) Mountain & Ban Co Peak for panoramic views over the city, Hai Van Pass, Ba Na Hills & Cham Islands.

Brave Hai Van Pass

The Hai Van Pass is undoubtedly one of the top attractions in Vietnam. It sits at around 500 meters above sea level, making it the highest pass in the whole of Vietnam. It was made ever more popular amongst tourists after its appearance on Top Gear, who dubbed it ‘one of the best coastal roads in the world’.

Brave the infamous 13 mile long winding roads and enjoy panoramic views of Da Nang City itself and the South China Sea. On the pass, there’s even a fort that was built during the French colonial period and used as a bunker during the Vietnam War by American and South Vietnamese troops.

If you’re feeling brave enough, you can rent out a one-way scooter for the best experience, or book a 3-hour coach journey. 

Hai Van Pass can also be experienced on the train from Hue if you don’t fancy braving the notoriously winding roads. Plus, this is probably one of the most relaxing and scenic train journeys in Vietnam with stunning views of the coastline.

Take a Trip to Cham Islands

Escape Da Nang City for the day to Vietnam’s national scenic site, the peaceful Chàm Islands. Between the 8 islands, enjoy water sports like kayaking and swimming, diving and snorkelling amid beautiful tropical coral reefs, and attraction sites. Hòn Lao, the largest and most popular island, has tranquil beaches, marine exhibits at Cham Museum, along with tiny Buddhist temples. 

There are also traditional fishing villages to explore and rustic homestays and seafood restaurants around the pier. The best time to dive or snorkel at Cham Islands is between June and August for calm waters & visibility. Cu Lao Cham Marine Park is recognised as a global Biosphere reserve by UNESCO and has a thriving coral reef system and marine life – perfect for diving!

Explore The Marble Mountains

The Marble Mountains of Da Nang feature a cluster of five sacred limestone hills and marble carvings. Its believed that they sprouted from the eggshells of a dragon. Its hillsides are scattered with Buddhist pagodas and temples and populated by red-faced monkeys. Enjoy the unbelievable panoramic views of the city from the top.

Cham Museum of Sculpture

This small but important museum by Han River offers an insight into the Cham culture with statues & relics. The Kingdom of Champa governed South Vietnam from 192 – 1697. Here, you’ll find the world’s largest collection of Cham artefacts. The audio guide is 20,000d (you’ll need to show ID, passport or driving licence).

Visit Asia Park

Asia Amusement is the largest tourist destination in Da Nang city with a diverse entertainment complex. It’s not hard to miss the huge Ferris wheel glistening over Da Nang City – this is the main attraction at the park. Be sure to ride the wheel to watch the sunset over the city.

There’s also a really good selection of adrenaline-boosting rides to choose from, perfect for all ages. There’s even an Angkor Wat replica in the park. Entry cost for adults is 150,000 VND and 100,000 VND for children.

BEACHES

Thanks to Phu Quoc’s position in the Gulf of Thailand, the island lays claim to some of Vietnam’s best beaches. If you’re not staying on one of the beaches, you can easily hire a taxi, rent a motorbike, or get on the Hop-on Hop-off Bus. These are the best beaches in Phu Quoc that you *need* to explore…

Long Beach

Phu Quoc’s headline act is the aptly-named Long Beach – a 20km sweep of pure-white sand, backed by rows of palm trees and restaurants. Also known as Bai Truong, this one is a great spot for swimming, and the water isn’t too deep so it’s perfect if you’re travelling with children. Spend the evening in a bar on Long Beach itself watching the iconic sunset that Phu Quoc is famous for.

Ganh Dau Beach

Located on the north-western tip of Phu Quoc Island, Ganh Dau Beach is set in a tranquil cove made up of flour-white sand, coconut trees, and calm, crystal clear waters. Reached via a paved lane leading east from the lively fishing village of the same name, Ganh Dau Beach is sheltered, shaded and peaceful. Perfect if you’re looking for a bit of quiet time.

Sao Beach

With picture-perfect white sand distinctive turquoise-blue water, Sao Beach (or Bai Sao) is one of the most popular beaches on the Phu Quoc island. It lies just a few kilometres from An Thoi, the main shipping port at the southern tip of Phu Quoc. Relax with a gin and tonic in one of the beach bars, get involved in some watersports,  or enjoy some fresh and local seafood in one of the many restaurants dotted along the beachfront.

Ong Lang Beach

On the central north-west coast of Phu Quoc, around 10 minutes north of the main town of Duong Dong, you’ll find Ong Lang Beach. Its long stretch of lovely, sandy bays is punctuated by slabs of black, volcanic rock, coconut trees, and lively restaurants and bars. It’s everything you’d want a tropical beach to be, and more. 

Rach Vem (Starfish) Beach

Rach Vem (better known as Starfish Beach) is Phu Quoc’s most remote and underdeveloped beach. Reached via a sandy lane, this beach has become a popular day trip, especially for domestic tourists. Its abundance of floating fish farms (which double as seafood restaurants) and hundreds of starfish that live in the shallow water here make it one of Phu Quoc best-kept secrets.

Bai Dai Beach

Bai Dai beach offers all of the same characteristics of Phu Quoc’s best beaches; calm turquoise waters and long stretches of flour-white sands backed onto lush green forestry. It even backs onto VinPearl Theme Park, a safari, and a golf course. Book a nights stay at one of the resorts built along the beachfront to truly experience Bai Dai’s beauty. 

Vung Bau Beach

Between Bai Dai beach in the north and Cua Can beach in the south lies Vung Bau beach. It’s remote enough to make you feel like you have the beach to yourself, yet close enough to bars, restaurants and local resorts for a bite to eat and drink. There has been quite a bit of development here, with more to come soon.

Cua Can Beach

Cua Can is a smaller, more secluded beach in the north-west of the island. It sits at the point where the clear-flowing Cua Can River meets the Gulf of Thailand. There’s a local fishing village, kayaking, sailing, and great street food. The best budget places to stay are Dormstay Riverside and Phu Quoc Ecolodge.

Go Diving

Phu Quoc has some of the best spots for diving, especially for beginners or inexperienced divers as the water surrounding the island is calm, clear, and not too deep. You can even become PADI certified here. Some of the best spots to dive include Dry Island, Nudibranch Island. An Thoi Islands are perfect for those looking for more of a challenge or experienced divers. The best time to dive in Phu Quoc is between April and October for calm waters & visibility.

Go Snorkelling

Phu Quoc has some of the best marine life in Vietnam, making it the perfect place to explore the underwater world. Most of the boat trips will include a snorkel experience, or you can just take a snorkelling lesson if you’d prefer. Underwater, you’ll be able to spot a variety of marine animals from octopus to scorpionfish, and anemones to eels. Again, the best time to snorkel in Phu Quoc is between October and April.

Get Active With Watersports

Adrenaline junkie? Be sure to spend a day on either Sao Beach or Long Beach making waves along the turquoise waters on a jet ski. Kayaking in the sea is also common on the island, and you can even kayak up the river into the jungle parts of the island.

An amusement park on an exotic island? Yes, you heard right. On Long Beach, you’ll find Southwest Vietnam’s biggest and most modern amusement park, Vinwonders. This entertainment paradise is a must-see during your visit to Phu Quoc. Enjoy indoor activities, including a 5D cinema and games area, as well as a waterpark, and aquarium. There’s even a dolphin and mermaid shows, shark feeding demonstrations, and a musical water fountain.

Enjoy A Cable Car Ride With a View

Enjoy the relaxing 8km long cable car ride over the turquoise bays and fishing villages from An Thoi to Hon Thom Island (also known as Pineapple Island). The journey is about 15 mins each way and once you arrive in Pineapple Island, be sure to visit Sun World Nature Theme Park. From there, island-hop via speedboat to some of the other beautiful, untouched islands.

Island Hop Around An Thoi Islands

Just off of the southern coast of Phu Quoc lie the An Thoi Islands, made up of 15 stunning  islands and islets. With a total of just 5 residents living on the islands, you’ll experience what island life is really all about. Spend the day hopping around the islands sightseeing, fishing, swimming and snorkelling.

Getting to the Islands is easy. Just take the cable car to Pineapple Island (the largest island in the An Thoi group) and from there jump on a speedboat over to explore the other 14 islets.  Or, book onto a boat tour where your driver will stop off throughout the day at the best islands.

Explore Duong Dong Market

Out of the six markets in Phu Quoc, Duong Dong is by far the biggest, most atmospheric, and best-valued. Located right in the heart of Duong Dong Town, on the river bank, you’ll find a selection of snacks, coconut ice cream, and a parade of outdoor restaurants serving a delicious range of food. Stick around to watch the market come to life at nightime.

HISTORICAL

Visit Phu Quoc Prison

You’ll be surprised to learn that this idyllic island once had much more darker, notorious past times. Phu Quoc’s notorious old prison (also known as Coconut Tree Prison) was built by the French in the late 1940s to hold political dissidents. It was also used by the Americans to hold captured North Vietnamese soldiers, including many high ranking leaders. A total of 40,000 prisoners were detained here – many were released but still suffer from physical and  mental illnesses to this today. 

Now a museum, you’ll find authentic torture instruments, photos of former prisoners, and exhibits of the brutal punishments that the prisoners were made to endure.  A truly chilling and sobering experience – not one to be missed.

NATURE

Chill Out At Suoi Tranh Waterfall

Phu Quoc has several beautiful springs originating in the hills that you won’t want to miss. The most accessible of these, Suoi Tranh, is just 4 metres tall but surrounded by lush, vibrant forestry. Look for the entrance sign and concrete tree from the Duong Dong–Vong Beach road. From the ticket counter it’s a 10-minute walk through the forest to the falls.

Phu Quoc National Park

It may be hard to imagine, but around 70% of Phu Quoc is made up of forestry. This National Park is one of Vietnam’s natural wonders as it is the last of the forestry in the south region. In 2010, the park was declared a Unesco Biosphere Reserve and is now fully protected (as are the 200 animals there too). The forest is densest in the Khu Rung Nguyen Sinh forest reserve in northern Phu Quoc; you’ll need a motorbike or mountain bike to tackle the bumpy dirt roads that cut through it as there are no real hiking trails.

CULTURE

Visit Ho Quoc Pagoda (Truc Lam Temple)

A more recent addition to Phu Quoc, Ho Quoc Pagoda was only built in 2012 but has some of the most impressive views you’ll see from any temple in Vietnam. Set on a remote stretch of coastal road off Bai Dam beach, 20km from Duong Dong town, this temple is set in the most scenic location that is beautifully framed by the blue skies and clear waters that it overlooks. Locals are known to arrive early to watch the sunrise from behind the mountains, over the temple itself.

Explore Local Life at Ham Ninh Fishing Village

For a truly authentic insight into the local lifestyle of Phu Quoc, we recommend getting up early one morning and grabbing a taxi or scooter to watch the sunrise over Ham Ninh. This fishing village is still lacking the rest of the island’s development, so it’s a great way to experience the true life of local fishermen. You’ll find unique seafood dishes with plenty of amazing spots to eat.

Dinh Cau Rock

Whilst in Phu Quoc, make sure you head out to Dinh Cau Rock (also known as Cau Temple) for dinner with a view whilst watching the famous Phu Quoc sunset. The temple is beautifully positioned on the rocks by the sea, next to Duong Dong fishing harbour and a brightly coloured lighthouse. Local fishermen are known to gather here and pray before going out to sea every morning.

Chill Out On Nha Trang’s Beautiful Beaches

With plenty of time on the agenda for some R’n’R in Nha Trang, why not spend it chilling on the white sands that define the shoreline? The main beach, Tran Phu, is easy to walk to from almost anywhere in Nha Trang and has a lively seaside promenade with restaurants, bars, and activities. Walk to Long Son Pagoda

Whilst in Nha Trang, be sure to climb to the Long Son Pagoda. This 19th-century temple boasts beautiful glittering mosaic dragons that adorn the roof and entrance. The hike may be a little challenging, but it is more than worth it to take in the views. Be sure to also check out the 24 metres tall White Buddha whilst you’re there for amazing views of the city.

NATURE

Explore Ba Ho Waterfall

Nha Trang is known for its stunning waterfalls and Ban Ho is one of our favourites to visit. It features 3 tiers with swimming pools at the bottom of each. It can be quite a challenge to walk to each tier of waterfalls, but it’s definitely worth the effort. One of the pools even has a 37-foot jump, perfect for cooling off in the Vietnamese heat.

Chill Out In Thac Yang Bay

Around an hour’s drive from Nha Trang is a smaller and slightly less-visit waterfall, Thac Yang Bay. This one can be quite expensive to reach unless you’ve got a motorbike, but it’s worth venturing out for a relaxing day swim in clean & clear water. There are even hot spring water pools to chill in.

Check Out The National Oceanographic Museum

There aren’t many museums in Nha Trang, but we definitely recommend checking out The National Oceanographic Museum. You’ll see over 20,000 live and preserved marine specimens, including colourful fish, sea horses, sharks, and turtles. Learn about local fishing life and spot the rare indigenous underwater creatures that are worth the visit alone. It’s a great choice if you are travelling with younger visitors!

HISTORICAL

Explore Po Nagar Cham Towers

Po Nagar Cham Towers were built from the 7th to the 12th centuries by the Cham people who once ruled this area. Cham people still worship their Gods here during the annual religious festival of Thap Ba between April and May. They were built in honour the Goddess Po Nagar, also known as ‘The Mother of the country’. Its 5km from the city.

There are four separate buildings that are used as a place of worship by Cham, Chinese, Vietnam and Buddhist worshippers. Located on the banks of the scenic Cai River, this is not one to miss whilst in Nha Trang.

Tour the Alexandre Yersin Museum

Visit the museum dedicated to Alexandre Yersin, a popular French-Swiss bacteriologist and scientist who lived from 1863 to 1943. He introduced rubber and quinine producing trees to Vietnam as well as discovering the microbe that causes bubonic plague. The museum contains a large collection of his research equipment, letters, and a short film about his life.

Tour Thanh Citadel

Thanh Citadel was built in the 17th century by the Trinh dynasty. It was then rebuilt again by Prince Nguyen Anh in 1793 as part of a battle with the Tay Son Rebels. Although only a few sections of the original walls and gates remain, it’s a good spot if you want to see the more traditional side of Nha Trang. It’s a 25-minute drive from Nha Trang city.

CULTURAL

Visit A Fishing Village

Around 10 kilometres to the south of Nha Trang you will find a number of traditional fishing villages. We recommend joining a small boat tour which will take you straight from Nha Trang, making a stop at one of the villages. You’ll learn more about their lives and how they form the backbone of the fishing community in Vietnam.

Art and photography lovers will fall in love with Long Thanh Gallery. Here, you will find mostly black and white prints by one of the most prominent photographers in Vietnam, Long Thanh. Most of his work is focused on local communities and simple portraits of everyday life in Vietnam from the past 50 years. If you want to get an alternative look at the local culture in Nha Trang then this is not to be missed.

Learn at XQ Historical Village

Founded in 1999 by artists to showcase needlework & paintings to tourists, the XQ Historical Village showcases the age-old needlework traditions to tell tales of Vietnam through brightly coloured handmade items. Watch craftswomen working in pairs to create these before your eyes. A typical landscape they create takes around 2-3 months & portrait picture takes 5+ months. Plus, the village employs more than 3,500 people from across the country.

RELIGIOUS

See Nha Trang Cathedral

Visit the largest church in the city, Nha Trang Cathedral, with mass ceremonies taking place every day. Built in 1928, this Gothic-style cathedral is made entirely from stone and features beautiful stained glass windows. Its three bells were cast in France in 1789 and still ring perfectly to this today.

Shop at Dam Market

Nha Trang is well-known amongst tourist and locals for some of the best shopping spots. If you want to shop like a local though, ditch the high-end shops and head for Dam Market. This is the largest market in Nha Trang and features 3 stories of stalls selling everything from Vietnamese clothing and street food to local specialities and produce. For the most authentic experience, set that alarm and head to the market from 4 am to experience the market bustling in its truest form.

Chill Out at Thap Ba Hot Springs and Mud Baths

If your craving a little bit of relaxation during your travels, then head north of Nha Trang to Thap Ba Hot Springs and Mud Baths. This ultimate chill spot has both private and shared mud-baths, herbal baths, jacuzzis, waterfalls, hot and cold swimming pools, and a steamy sauna.

The mud baths are known to have healing properties thanks to their high mineral content. Relax in the mud bath, slathering your skin with the mud and let it work its magic.

Learn to Surf at Ana Marina Flow House

If you fancy taking up a new skill in Nha Trang, then spend the afternoon at Ana Marina Flow House where you can enjoy many boardsport activities (without the need for actual waves). Learn how to surf, wakeboard, skimboard and more with a trained instructor and safety gear. Perfect for beginners or pros who want to show off! You can book 30 or 60-minute sessions.

Go Scuba Diving or Snorkeling 

Lovers of adventure and nature will not regret a day spent snorkelling and soaking up the exotic beauty of the colourful coral reefs of Nha Trang.

Most of the snorkelling tours go to Hon Mun Island, a marine protected area and the first marine conservation project in Vietnam. Or if you want to get PADI certified, then there are around 10 dive shops in Nha Trang where you can take classes. The best time to snorkel is between April and October.

Enjoy a Blind massage

Why not enjoy a massage whilst giving back to the community? Around Nha Trang, several spots offer massages from blind masseurs who are trained in the art of Vietnamese massage. A massage typically costs the same price as a coffee and the money helps the employment of local blind people.

You can opt for a variety of different kinds of massage and most treatments last for around an hour.

FOOD & DRINK

BBQ at Lac Canh

Enjoy dinner at a barbecue joint filled with smoke and laughter (and meats that you can grill over charcoal at your table) at Lac Canh. You’ll enjoy a memorable dining experience in a popular spot where locals gather to feast on meat. Richly marinated beef with spices is the speciality, but there are chicken cuts and seafood too which you grill over charcoal at your table. Note: it closes quite early.

Go Vegan at Yên Vegetarian

If meat isn’t really your thing, then Yên Vegetarian is a great spot for cheap-but-cheerful veggie and vegan options.

This intimate place is perfect for budget veggie food that will be sure to impress meat-eaters too. Expect amazing seaweed fried rice, bitter melon salad and green mango salads. The bamboo seating and pot plants add to its romantic charm. Located down a little alley off Ð Le Thanh Ton, there’s even a yoga school here.

Drink with a View at Skylight Bar
